Four Flying Fifteens and 43 sails are being sent to Canada courtesy of the 15 volunteers or helpers who made this happen - all under the sound coordination of John Hassen.
All four boats had been sitting around unused for a number of years, but they will be greatly appreciated by the folks at Salt Spring Island Sailing Club whose fleet is steadily growing.
Many thanks in particular to John Lyus, Adam Semple, Harry Miller and Wayne Hudson for donating their boats. Given that the boats were covered in dust with who knows what else lurking in the hulls and tanks, extensive cleaning was required to clean the boats so that they would pass Canada's strict biosecurity laws. Getting the boats prepared for departure also required the removal of keels, removal of rigging from spars, repair of launching trolleys and washing of sails. Getting this done was a real team effort.
Salt Spring Island Sailing Club have complimentary moorage ready for their "new" F15s, and are setting up a calendar for online booking - free- for a growing team of sailors excited to join in the fun racing and cruising in F15s. This includes people from other local and international sailing clubs.
The F15 fleet at South of Perth Yacht Club can be proud for helping promote the class internationally and giving new life to boats that would otherwise have ended up abandoned or in landfill.
